500 linear metres of 7 m deep cut off wall has recently been installed for the Environment Agency at Goole using soil mixing technology. The soil mixing involved the use of a binder to create an impermeable cut off wall to stop the flow of water through the flood defence embankment during times of flooding.
The embankment was unable to carry large loads so a compact soil mixing rig weighing just 22 tons was utilised along with a mixing plant that was located at the far end of the site. The slurry was then pumped up to 500 m as the job progressed.
Weap holes in the brick retaining wall on the road side of the embankment were wet when we arrived on site, but as the job got underway they dried up gradually and when we left the site the whole wall was dry proving easily to the naked eye that the job was a success.
In addition to this extensive testing was carried out and the soil mixing rig and mixing plant instrumentation was able to provide a back up for the whole QA procedure.
