Flood Defence Retaining Walls Installed in Carlisle, Cumbria

Flood defence retaining walls and CFA bearing piles installed in Carlisle, Cumbria as part of flood alleviation scheme on behalf of the Environment Agency.

As you can see from the photo the access to the site was extremely restricted so we selected a CZM EM600 compact CFA piling rig to install the majority of the piles for the flood defence retaining walls and the CFA bearing piles.

The retaining walls were mostly contiguous type utilising 450 mm diameter CFA piles drilled to a typical depth of 8 m.

We brought in a larger more powerful THW 4019D rig pictured below to install a secant retaining wall for another flood defence wall on a different section of the job. There the ground conditions were more difficult and the piles had to be drilled to a depth of 14 m. These piles were 600 mm diameter.
